Judge Orders Nursing Home To Pay Family Of Patient Who Had 57 Maggots Removed From Her Ear

CBS Chicago

(CBS) — The family of a nursing home patient who was so neglected maggots hatched in her ear has been awarded $250,000 in damages. The case was first reported two years ago by CBS 2 investigator Pam Zekman.

Now a judge has ruled that 91-year-old Catherine McCann did not receive adequate medical or personal care and the effects on her contributed to her wrongful death.

“In this case they allowed Catherine McCann to have a fly get into her ear canal, lay eggs and hatch 57 maggots,” said Henry Gruss, the family’s attorney.

A spokesman for the Lutheran Home for the Aged said it was advised not to comment on the court case. At the time of our report the home’s administrator said it did nothing wrong.
