Police in Australia have described the case of a six-year-old boy who was sexually abused by his adoptive gay fathers and other people as “depraved”.
The men, who obtained the baby from a Russian surrogate in 2005, had presented themselves as loving fathers before their arrests in California last year.
Authorities in Australia and the US worked together to bring the men to justice after it emerged that the child had been offered to others for sexual exploitation from a very young age.
Last week one of the men, an American, was jailed in the US for 40 years while the other, who is from New Zealand, is still to be sentenced.
“None of these cases are very good,” Queensland Detective Inspector Jon Rouse, who heads the task force which investigates online child exploitation and abuse, told the AFP news agency.
“What’s pretty sad about this one is the way this child came into their lives. It’s just really a tragedy. It’s extremely depraved.”
It is not known whether the boy was conceived with one of the men’s sperm. But he had been living as the couple’s son when a chance discovery in New Zealand put police on their trail.
Authorities investigating a child sex offender in Wellington found images of the boy on the man’s computer.
The images were not illegal, but raised a red flag with Australian police who saw them as “modelling shots”. Further investigations unearthed chat logs between the couple and other child sex offenders.
When police raided the couple’s home while they were in the United States, they found enough material on laptops and other devices to ensure their arrest and the boy’s removal from their care.
DI Rouse said police were determined to ensure that all offenders were tracked down.
“We are talking about a fairly extensive network of child sex offenders,” he said.

A British fugitive who escaped from prison after stabbing his aunt 70 times in a frenzied murder has been recaptured after 15 years on the run.
Simon Hennessey, who was 14 when he was convicted of killing his elderly relative in a brutal knife attack, was arrested by Australian detectives investigating a credit card scam in Queensland.
Hennessey, 49, was arrested in April and initially charged with 50 counts of fraud under a false name, authorities unaware that they were dealing with the wanted killer.
He originally claimed to be from New Zealand and according to Australian media appeared in local courts several times under that identity before police realised he was not who he purported to be.
A spokeswoman for Queensland Police said he had been arrested earlier this month in the Sunshine Coast town of Maroochydore.
He appeared before Maroochydore Magistrates’ Court on June 17 and is currently in custody pending his next hearing in July.
‘There is not much more we can say because of the court situation but we are aware that he is a wanted criminal in the UK,’ she said.
Hennessey’s arrest is understood to be related to a sophisticated credit card scam running to tens of thousands of Australian dollars.
He could face a lengthy prison sentence if convicted in an Australian court, but Avon and Somerset police have already contacted the authorities in Australia to discuss his extradition .
He escaped from the Leyhill Open Prison in Gloucestershire in 1998, just three days after being transferred from the secure mental unit where he had served 20 years of a life sentence for manslaughter.
Originally from Plymouth, Hennessey had pleaded guilty to killing 72-year-old Mary Webber at his 1978 trial on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
Detectives said they believed he had travelled between Thailand, New Zealand and Queensland during his years on the run, using a series of stolen identities and false passports.

‘He had not been seen or heard of until he was picked up at Tewantin,” Sunshine Coast CIB chief Daren Edwards was quoted as saying by the Sunshine Coast Daily.
‘We knew there was more to him and it appears he has used several identities.
‘We believe he has moved between Thailand, New Zealand and Australia.
‘It looks like he has been coming and going from Australia since about 2003.’
Hennessey is currently in custody in Queensland and faces his next court hearing on July 15. If found guilty of the fraud charges he could be jailed in Australia, or be extradited back to the United Kingdom.
Avon and Somerset police said they had been in touch with the Queensland authorities and hoped to begin extradition proceedings.

In 1770, British sea captain Lieutenant James Cook landed on the east coast of Australia, claiming the territory for England. But a new expedition led by an Australian anthropologist is seeking evidence of ancient explorations that may have taken place far before Cook and his fellow European explorers ever arrived on the continent.

The expedition, led by Ian McIntosh, a professor at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), will follow a nearly 70-year-old treasure map to an area where a cache of mysterious, 1,000-year-old coins was discovered in the 1940s, according to a IUPUI release.

The researchers hope to discover how the coins ended up in the sand — whether they washed ashore from a shipwreck and whether they can provide more details about ancient trading routes.

The coins were originally found during World War II by Australian soldier Maurie Isenberg, who was stationed in a remote area known as the Wessel Islands, off the Australian north coast. While fishing one day in 1944, Isenberg found a few old coins and took them home as keepsakes. It wasn’t until 1979 that Isenberg sent the coins to be authenticated and learned they were actually 1,000 years old.

According to IUPUI, some of the coins are from the Dutch East India Company, while five older coins came from Kilwa Sultanate in Tanzania. Once an opulent trading hub, Kilwa is now in ruins, classified a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

“This trade route was already very active, a very long period of time ago, and this may [be] evidence of that early exploration by peoples from East Africa, or from the Middle East,” McIntosh told Indiana Public Media.

Australia has a “fixation” on Cook and the Dutch explorers who reached Australia in the 1600s, but the coins hint at something bigger, McIntosh said.

“There is strong evidence that Australia was part of a broad trading network,” that at one point included southern Africa, India, China and the Spice Islands, McIntosh told The Huffington Post. “To what extent we have no idea, but we have to find out.”

The Wessel Islands, located about 130 kilometers off Australia’s northern coast, serve as a “big catching arm” for any ships blown off course, McIntosh told HuffPost.

“Everything about [the islands] speaks of ancient context,” he said.

McIntosh will be attempting to retrace Isenberg’s steps, using a map the old soldier drew by hand. Isenberg marked the coins’ site with an “X.”

“It’s like a detective story. We’re trying to piece together the past,” he said.

McIntosh will be joined by a team of Australian and American historians, archaeologists, geomorphologists and Aboriginal rangers. With financial backing from the Australian Geographic Society, the team will map and survey the area where the coins were discovered, test the soil and conduct various coastal analysis, according to the IUPUI news release.

ENGLAND may have retained the ASHES and the series but I am not too convinced as the Astrailians did not even try to put up a fight which gave the pissed heads victory.
It’s a shame when top class teams bowed out to a bunch of no hopers who shout with a chance of their oponents been given out because of their noise in sequence as to frightened the umpiers into believing it was a hit rather than a miss, until they can change that then they won’t be good enought to be a Jeff Boycott.
