Pregnant woman beaten at church

An argument between two female members of the Bethel Town Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Westmoreland, turned ugly recently and resulted in a physical confrontation at the church.

This was revealed in the Whithorn Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday, where one of the women, Nashara Gordon, 24, appeared on charges of unlawful wounding and malicious destruction of property.

The court learnt that the incident occurred about 4:30 p.m. just before the start of the afternoon session of Sabbath worship in front of church elders who had summoned both women to a meeting to quell their differences.

It was revealed that on Saturday, December 28, 2013, Gordon was on a grave in the church yard when she was called into the vestry by church elders to discuss her differences with the complainant, a pregnant 39-year-old Susan Webster. But no settlement was reached and an argument started between the women.

The court heard that Gordon bit the pregnant woman’s finger, kicked and hit her and tore off her blouse. It was further heard that the sisters of the church had to hold the irate Gordon and pull her away.

Gordon, a merchandiser with no previous conviction, pleaded guilty before Resident Magistrate Sheron Barnes, and was fined $50,000 or six months for unlawful wounding and $10,000 or three months for malicious destruction of property.

The court was also told that some four weeks after the incident, Webster lost her baby and further medical and investigations are to be conducted to determine if Gordon will face charges.

Social Services forcibly remove unborn child from woman by caesarean after she suffered mental health breakdown.

A pregnant woman has had her baby forcibly removed by caesarean section because she had suffered a mental breakdown.
In what has been described as an unprecedented case, Essex social services obtained a High Court order that allowed her to be forcibly sedated and her child removed from her womb.

According to The Sunday Telegraph, the council said it was acting in the best interests of the mother.

Social services are refusing to give the baby girl, who is now 15 months old, back to her mother, despite the woman claiming she has recovered.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is an Italian national who came to Britain in July last year to attend a training course with an airline at Stansted Airport in Essex.

She is reported to have suffered a panic attack, which her relations believe was due to her failure to take regular medication for an existing bipolar condition.

She called the police, who took her to a psychiatric facility where she was restrained and sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

Essex social services then obtained a High Court order in August 2012 for the birth “to be enforced by way of caesarean section”, according to legal documents seen by The Sunday Telegraph.

The baby was born five weeks later after which the mother returned to Italy.

Brendan Fleming, the woman’s lawyer, told the newspaper: “I have never heard of anything like this in all my 40 years in the job. I can understand if someone is very ill that they may not be able to consent to a medical procedure, but a forced caesarean is unprecedented.

“If there were concerns about the care of this child by an Italian mother, then the better plan would have been for the authorities here to have notified social services in Italy and for the child to have been taken back there.”

An Italian High Court judge has questioned whether British care proceedings should have been applied to the child of an Italian citizen.

The matter will be raised in Parliament this week by John Hemming, a Liberal Democrat MP who chairs the Public Family Law Reform Coordinating Campaign.

There was sheer excitement inside the Coronation Market last Thursday with flashing lights characteristic of paparazzi taking pictures of a celebrity, after a woman appeared to be shopping in the nude.

THE STAR was told the spectacle drew several onlookers who huddled around to feast their eyes and snap pictures with their cell phones of the eye-catching exposure.

“She looked sane to me, was just a ho. She was bleach brown and looked to be in her 30s. She was wearing a wig and was walking and looking at things,” a passer-by said.

A regular male shopper who claimed to have witnessed the incident commented, “While I was shopping in the market, I saw a woman in the nude. A lot of people were taking pictures with their phones.”

regular practice

Vendors interviewed were uncertain who the woman was but claimed that it is regular practice for some female shoppers to be scantily dressed that sometimes it is hard to determine if they are clothed.

“Sometimes, mi say mi ago put up bib for the woman dem. Some of the women come here in the market with little clothes on. The woman can’t even bend down to take up anything,” a female vendor joked.

They expressed concern that there is no regulated mode of dress for visitors to the market as it is a public space open 24/7 except on Sundays.

Vendors also complained of sporadic robberies that have been taking place in the market.

THE STAR was unable to put the issue to Mayor of Kingston, Angela Brown Burke, as calls to her cell phone went unanswered.

Meanwhile, The Darling Street police said they have no reports of the incident but explained that such exposure is unlawful and could attract a charge of public indecency.

RESIDENTS of 89 Maxfield Avenue were in shock yesterday morning as they woke up to find the body of a naked teenaged girl at the gates of the St Phillips Anglican Church.
The body was not identified up to press time yesterday but a police officer on the scene told the Jamaica Observer that the deceased appeared to be between the ages of 16 and 19.
“She appears to be an adolescent,” said the policeman from the St Andrew South Police Division who secured the crime scene.
A report from the Constabulary Communication Network said the body was of brown complexion, slim build, about 163 centimetres (5 feet 4 inches) long with braided extensions.
Police said the body had several stab wounds in the neck and abdomen. A bloodied underwear was found several feet from where the body lay in a pool of blood and the brassiere was cut off her body.
The young woman‘s unclad body was near the entrance to the Norman Manley High School and due to police yellow tape some students of the institution were inconvenienced as they were prevented from entering school as officers tried to preserve the crime scene.
Staff at Norman Manley High, Glenhope Place of Safety and the Maxfield Park Children’s Home — all located at that section of Maxfield Avenue which is close to the communities of Frog City and McDonald Lane — were given a chance to view the corpse in a bid to ascertain the victim’s identity. However, none of the persons who viewed the body were able to identify her.
“It seems she was not from around here either as none of the residents who saw her could identify her. No one seems to know her,” a policeman said.
One man who resides at the nearby Ethiopian Orthodox Church complained that thieves were plaguing persons who traversed the road on foot and said a woman was robbed of her cellular phone and slashed several times as she made her way to work one morning about 8:00 am.
“This road is very dangerous as they rob people very regularly even in the day. We have reported this to the police and asked them to patrol the road regularly. It gets worse at night as the road is pitch dark. The thieves use the football field as their escape route,” he said, suggesting that those robbers could be responsible for the young woman’s demise.
A woman who had gathered behind the yellow tape said it was possible that the young woman was raped and killed at the spot where her body was found. “It coulda happen right there as when night come not many people walk around there,” she said.
After the police handed over the body to funeral home workers and the curious crowd converged on the spot where the woman’s body lay, a knife blade was seen at the blood-soaked earth by the residents who showed iti to the police.
The blade was retrieved and taken into evidence.
The police said vaginal swabs will be conducted on the body to find out if the female was sexually abused.

There was high drama in Braeton, St Catherine, on Wednesday following an incident in which a woman reportedly got into a fight with what residents said was a ghost.

The incident left many residents speechless and cowering in fear after the ghost, said to be that of a male, reportedly knocked the woman unconscious.

A woman who said she glimpsed the ghost, described the spirit as a short, bald-headed man, who was not wearing a shirt.

“Everybody a wonder a weh di duppy come from, but I don’t have a thing to say because mi remember one time duppy tell mi dat mi chat too much,” a resident from the area said.

THE STAR understands that since the incident, the woman has been wandering in the community barefooted.

It is reported that sometime after 7 p.m., the young woman was at home when she was knocked unconscious by what she later told residents was a strong force.

Residents say that when the young woman regained consciousness, she started fighting the ghost and kicking a fence.

THE STAR was told that incident drew a large crowd, and sent tongues wagging. The woman, it was further heard, was taken from the area to a gated community in St Catherine by relatives a couple hours later, but was then taken aback, apparently as the ghost was still tormenting her.

One resident who heard that the woman was taken to a gated community, made several comments, one of which caused much laughter. “How di duppy fi go a dat community, is a gated community,” said the resident to much laughter.

A resident who was a part of the crowd said he too became afraid, as the young woman is known by many in the community as a sane person.

“Mi never see anything like dis, mi always hear dem a talk about duppy, but a first mi ever see somebody a run up and down so and a fight back duppy. One person even seh dat dem see di duppy so people start ketch dem fraid because it look like everywhere di girl go, di duppy go deh to,” the resident said.

A 20-year old woman was stabbed to death during an incident with an 18-year-old female in Greater Portmore, St Catherine, early yesterday.

Information reaching THE STAR is that shortly after midnight, one of the women was on her way to a shop in Four East in Greater Portmore, when she saw the other woman.

It was reported that an argument developed after the women found out about each other via Facebook.

Superintendent Clive Blair of the St Catherine South Division said both women were in a common-law relationship with the same man.

According to police report, the women started fighting, during which a sharp instrument was used to stab the 20-year-old in the neck. The injured woman was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital where she died during treatment.

The 18-year-old was taken into police custody. She is yet to be charged.

The names of both women have not been released and the whereabouts of the man at the source of the feud is unknown.
